lately mine have evolved. mutated, even. sometimes they arrive saturday afternoon. sometimes friday night. sometimes i am actively still working on thursday and already thinking about the fact that eventually another monday will happen. the sunday scaries have surpassed sunday scaries at this point.
and listen, i'm trying to be a positive girl!!! i really am!!! i have a job and i get to buy silly things with the money they deposit into my bank account twice a month. beautiful. incredible. thank you corporate america.
but sometimes the thought of five whole days of emails, meetings, deadlines, and little red notification bubbles makes me want to simply become unreachable by modern technology... forever.
unfortunately, disappearing into the woods isn't currently doable in the landscape we live in, so i've gotten pretty serious about making sunday feel less like the waiting room at the dentist that is monday.
so i've started making sure there's something in my week that has absolutely nothing to do with being productive at work. it might be a craft i want to work on, a show i'm saving, somewhere i want to go, or perhaps the best - enrichment time on pinterest. anything that reminds me that monday through friday are still my life. work gets eight-ish hours. it does not get custody of my entire day.
sometimes, it's something as small as getting a treat like a coffee or an energy drink from 7 Brew. what's your go to 7 Brew order, btw?
i've realized that telling myself “don't think about work” is basically useless. the second i tell my brain we're absolutely NOT thinking about work, guess what we're thinking about? work lol. so lately i've been trying something a little different. i accept that work is probably going to cross my mind outside of work, but i put some intention behind what i let myself do with that thought.
i can think about what i want for breakfast, whether i'm going to run out for coffee at lunch, what comfy outfit i want to wear since i work from home, what i'm making for dinner, or what little thing i'm going to look forward to when 5:00 rolls around.
what i'm trying not to think about are deadlines, emails, projects, problems or what someone at work said on friday. because the minute i start doing that, i'm not preparing myself for monday anymore. i'm just working without getting paid... and that's not me, baby!
i don't think beating the sunday scaries means convincing myself that i'm thrilled to open my laptop monday morning. sometimes i'm simply not lol. i think for me, it's more about refusing to let tomorrow ruin today.
